Enterprise week November 2009

On Monday 16th November students from the faculties of Art and Design and Business Studies took part in the annual Make Your Mark Challenge at the start of Global Entrepreneurship Week .

The students had prepared for weeks with workshops generating ideas and producing business plans.

Business advisors from local industries were invited to take part including corporate lawyers, graphic designers, financial advisors and HBOS business advisors.

The topic was disclosed at 9.00 am which challenged the students to “Let local inspiration lead you to a ‘cool’ creation”

Splitting into groups, they deliberated, expanded and refined their ideas throughout the day and finally came up with some very individual innovative schemes to take to the next stage of our challenge – going head to head in The Dragons’ Den.

Our ‘Dragons’ were carefully selected from the college executive team and our business partners. They listened to the best three proposals from each faculty.

Tremendous bravery was displayed by the students who had been allowed very little time to work on the presentation of their ideas which made it hard for the Dragons to choose a winner. However the simplicity of one proposal swung the final decision.

There were prizes for each member of the top three teams, but the first prize went to the team with the brilliant idea of starting up a mobile cinema which would take films to the many local rural outposts in Calderdale.

All proposals were entered into the national Make Your Mark Challenge but the real prize was the experience of working to a deadline as part of a team to develop the ’can-do’ attitude essential to innovative and enterprising thinking.
